Rankbyspec

Rankbyspec · Product-intelligence software for spec-based buying guides

Software that turns a product catalog into buying guides that maintain themselves.

The Rankbyspec Hub ingests Amazon’s product catalog, classifies every model by its published specifications, drafts spec-based guides with AI, and keeps them current as prices and stock change. It already powers 100 Rankbyspec-owned guide sites across 10 product categories.

The product

Rankbyspec Hub: one platform behind every guide.

The Hub is the software we build. It holds the shared catalog, decides what each site should publish, drafts and validates the writing, serves it over a signed API and pushes updates by webhook. The guide sites are thin clients of the Hub.

Shared catalog

292,548 models and 23,508 brands from Amazon’s Creators API, with spec values, images and offer history in one place. A product is stored once and used by every site that features it.

Attribute engine

Rules turn raw spec fields into the attributes shoppers filter on: price bands, capacity, wattage, features and brand. Each site gets a product type with its own attribute map.

Guide planner

Plans which guides a site needs and in what priority, then keeps the plan in sync as the catalog changes. Topics are never written twice on a site.

AI drafting with validators

Claude and other models draft sections from structured product data through JSON-schema outputs. Validators reject prices in text, testing claims, quoted reviews and duplicate content before a human sees the draft.

Freshness engine

Tiered offer refreshes, out-of-stock replacement, and automatic rewrites when a product joins or leaves a guide. 540,257 price checks logged so far.

Signed API and site runtime

Sites fetch guides, menus and live prices over an HMAC-signed REST API with ETags, and drop cached pages the moment a webhook arrives. A cached page serves in 7 ms.

What we publish

Every guide follows the same spec-first structure.

A reader lands on a question like “best air fryers under $200” and leaves with a shortlist, a side-by-side table and the trade-offs explained. No star ratings, no unboxing stories, no prices in the text.

The network

One hundred sites. One product type each.

A site covers a single product type deeply, from “under $50” to “with a viewing window”, instead of one site covering everything thinly. Sites in the same category link to each other, so a reader comparing espresso machines can reach coffee grinders in one click.

How a guide is made

Six steps, from a search term to a guide that maintains itself.

The whole pipeline runs in one central hub. The sites only render what the hub serves, which is how a small team keeps a hundred of them current.

  1. Discover

Each site starts from the search terms shoppers use for its product type. Amazon’s Creators API returns the matching models, and every model joins a shared catalog with its brand, images and spec values.

    7,300 keywords tracked
  2. Classify

Rules sort each model by the attributes people filter on: price band, size or capacity, wattage, features such as dual zone or a viewing window, and brand.

    292,548 models classified
  3. Plan

A planner decides which guides each site needs: best-of lists per attribute, brand pages, alternatives to a popular model, head-to-head comparisons and buying guides. A topic is written once per site.

    14,709 guides published
  4. Draft

A language model writes each section from the supplied product data only. Validators reject any draft that states a price, claims hands-on testing or quotes a customer review.

    no dollar amounts in text
  5. Check and publish

Guides are checked for duplicate content and against the site’s product type before going live. A guide whose products stop matching is pulled, repaired and republished.

    duplicate and type checks
  6. Keep fresh

Offers are rechecked in three tiers. A model out of stock on three checks in a row is replaced in every guide that features it, and any price older than 24 hours is hidden.

    2 h · 8 h · 23 h refresh tiers

Editorial standards

Rules the software enforces, not just a policy page.

Every site carries the same editorial policy and affiliate disclosure. The rules below are checked by the hub before a guide can be published.

Always

  • Prices and availability come from Amazon’s official Creators API, with the time they were checked shown next to them.
  • A price older than 24 hours is hidden and replaced by a “check price” link.
  • Product images are served from Amazon, never copied or re-hosted.
  • Every guide and every page carries an affiliate disclosure.
  • Every recommendation says why a model was picked and who it is not for.
  • Affiliate links are marked sponsored and nofollow.

Never

  • Scrape prices or store them inside the article text.
  • Claim hands-on testing that did not happen.
  • Quote or paraphrase Amazon customer reviews.
  • Write about a model using anything beyond its supplied product data.
  • Rank a product because of the commission it may earn.
  • Publish a guide whose products do not match its title.

Platform

One hub feeds a hundred thin, fast sites.

The sites hold no database and no editor. They ask the Hub for a guide over a signed API, cache the page, and are told by webhook the moment a price, a product or a guide changes. The writing runs on Claude and other models, all 100 sites run behind Cloudflare, and the next pieces of the Hub are being built on both platforms.

Built with Claude: today and next

  • Today A native Anthropic Messages client inside the Hub: structured JSON-schema outputs, effort control, retries and refusal handling, running on fibers for concurrency.
  • Today Message Batches rewrote the search title and description of every published guide: 226,373 requests across 14,709 guides in one run on Claude Haiku 5.5, October 2026.
  • Today Claude Sonnet 5.5 is the editor of last resort: sections the validators reject from cheaper models are re-drafted with it.
  • Next Claude as the primary drafting model for product cards and comparison sections, and for extracting missing spec values from product listings.

Built on Cloudflare: today and next

  • Today 100 zones proxied with Origin CA certificates, Full (strict) TLS, origin locked to Cloudflare IPs, aggressive edge caching of guide pages.
  • Next Live price lookups moved to Workers and KV at the edge, so a price never waits on the origin.
  • Next Catalog backups and product image references in R2 instead of a third-party S3 bucket.
  • Next Webhook fan-out to all sites through Queues, and draft validation experiments on Workers AI.

Company

A small, bootstrapped software company, founded in 2026.

Rankbyspec builds and operates the Hub and owns every site in the network. We are not an agency and do not publish for third parties. Revenue comes from affiliate commissions earned by our own sites, and goes back into the software.
